Cyclamen Flower Facts

Cyclamen can be grown both outdoors and indoors in pots. Cyclamen are a genus of plants containing 20 species. They are native in the Mediterranean and Africa. Cyclamen grow mainly in dry forest or scrub areas. They are part of the primrose family, although they are tuberous and bear no obvious resemblance to primroses. Cyclamen have white, bright pink, red or purple flowers.

Some cyclamen species are endangered due to population depletion caused by those who collect them to sell on the horticultural market. Many species are now propagated in nurseries to avoid harm to the wild species.

Medicinal Uses of Cyclamen

According to folklore, cyclamen worn by a woman in labor will speed the delivery. On the other hand, caution is given to women in earlier stages of pregnancy due to the concern that they will abort their baby if they come in contact with cyclamen. Cyclamen is said to counteract poison and to make an effective ointment to heal a snake bite.

Cyclamen have been used as a powerful purgative to clear the sinuses or remove boils or blemishes from the skin, but large doses can be poisonous, so theses practices are risky. A plaster of cyclamen was reputed to be helpful for cataracts, sunburn and gout.
